The eloquent persuasion of ancient times has been replaced by force. 106 The conclusion of the Essay is the culmination of an analysis of the origin of language and music that is at the same time a critical study of man’s moral and political development. In the Essay the two streams of Rousseau’s intellectual career are united; his musical theory reaches its fullest development in the work and his theory of human nature and development is in turn enriched by the musical theory it stimulated. Although he never published the Essay during his lifetime, Rousseau considered publishing in two diVerent manners, both of which alternatives are reXected in the organization of the present volume.

In the Second Discourse, just before his consideration of the origin of speech, Rousseau gives a similar description of savage man’s view of his “fellows”: “The conformities that time could make him perceive among them, his female, and himself led him to judge of those which he could not perceive; and . . ” 84 A consciousness of fellow humanity involves a sympathetic recognition of shared passion. Rousseau’s argument about the passionate origin of speech leads him to a consideration of the role of pity as the basis for the recognition of shared passion that leads to our communication with our fellows.

His mature musical theory is animated by the same spirit and based on the same principles as his “system” as a whole. In the concluding chapters of the Essay Rousseau describes a related decline in music and language on the one hand and in mores and government on the other. He locates the peak of music among the Greeks and then charts its decline. The changes in music are related to a “natural” change in the character of languages. As language was perfected by philosophy, melody assumed a separate existence and music lost its ancient energy.
