Nor did I know that Cicero had been the victim of a political murder. Latin as it was taught to me was important in a way similar to that of mathematics. Both required orderly analytical thought with symbols. Mathematics is a liberal art and not, I think, a science in the specialized sense that the word “science” has taken on both in common parlance and academic life. My trials with mathematics proceeded into freshman algebra, taught by a male version of the truly disagreeable Miss Fox. However, in my sophomore year I was liberated into the enlightening terror of a remarkable teacher who rivaled in effectiveness William Henry Eller, but with quite different methods and a totally different personality.
Not too long ago my wife Diana and I had a visit from John Lambert, now retired in Lake Forest, Illinois. We played a game between two old rivals, the Hanover Orioles and the Brookﬁeld Gas 44 ACADEMIC CHILD House Gang. In about the third inning, John looked across the card table and declared that this was a really good game — not just that game but the whole concept.
