I examine the extent to which the expand ing Chinese political economy influenced the Nasu Yi people in Shuixi, and I show how the Nasu Yi ruling elite took advantage of new economic opportunities to reconstitute its political-military authority. By the end of the sixteenth century, the Nasu Yi elite was once again asserting its political legitimacy as the inheritors of Mu'ege pride by challenging the presence of the Ming state in Guizhou.
